LET'S DEFINE IT

Black History Month is an annual celebration of black achievements and contributions to society. It honors black people from all periods of history and all social classes.

Why Is It Important?

There are many reasons why we could say that understanding Black History is important. We can talk about the importance of understanding the history of those who came before us. We could say that if we understand the experiences that Black people went through, it  will help us shape the way we treat minorities today. We could simply say that knowledge is power. However, in order to understand the history of the place we live in today, it’s imperative that we understand the foundation of Black History because the United States was built on that very foundation.

What It Means to Us?

At Veiled Collection, Black History Month is a chance to reflect on our actions throughout the year. Did we do our part in representing black lives? Did we speak up against injustice? Did we do our part in making sure that we supported black-owned businesses? See it’s easy to make sure that we’re all properly educated on black history but it’s harder to ensure that our actions demonstrate that with what we’ve learned. So for us, Black History Month, is a great time to learn, support, and teach. However, it’s also the perfect time to make sure that every month of the year we share those same practices we strive to highlight during Black History Month.

Did You Know?

Before getting into how we’re celebrating Black History Month at Veiled Collection, lets go over some facts:

  1. The first Black History Month, which was initially labeled as Black History Week, took place in 1926.

  2. Carter G. Woodson was the founder of Black History Month.
  3. February was chosen so that Black History Week would simultaneously overlap with Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays.
  4. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially declared the month of February as Black History Month.
  5. President Gerald Ford was the first president to officially recognize Black History Month in 1976.

How We Plan on Celebrating BHM

Educate Ourselves

Making sure that we’re reading books, watching documentaries, and listening to podcasts that explain the importance of black history.

Support Black-Owned Businesses

Instead of ordering from businesses without doing any research, we’re trying to find out which businesses are black-owned and putting our money there.

Show Solidarity and Call Out Injustice

Sharing petitions against injustice, attending rallies, and making sure that we’re following all of the proper media outlets.

Share Black Content

Sharing social media posts, stories, and blogs on our social media platforms in order to educate our followers.

Collaborate with Black Creators

Reaching out to black influencers and media personalities for monthly campaigns and striving to spread the word on black content we’re loving.

Keep Those Around Us Alert

Making sure that we share black news with our followers, friends and family in order to stay educated on any movements or changes.

There are many things to look forward to this month at Veiled Collection and we’re excited to share it all with you.
