Many of our maxi dresses come in several lengths, from 54" to 60". It's one of the things that makes modest dressing work for different heights, but it also means one more decision at checkout. Here's how to get it right the first time.
Why length matters so much
The right length makes a maxi dress look intentional. Too short and it can look like it shrank; too long and you'll be stepping on the hem all day. Choosing your size is about fit. Choosing your length is about proportion.
Start with the model
Every product page tells you which size and length our model is wearing. Use her as your reference point. For example, on the Lace Up Back Maxi Dress, our model is 5'7" and wears size XS in 58".
- If you're around the model's height, start with the length she's wearing.
- If you're shorter, choose a shorter length.
- If you're taller, choose a longer length.
Think about your shoes
The shoes you wear most often should decide your length. If you'll mostly wear the dress with flats or sneakers, size down in length. If it's an occasion dress you'll wear with heels, a longer length will give you that floor-skimming finish.
Use a dress you already love
The most reliable method: take a maxi dress or abaya you already own that falls exactly where you like it. Measure it from the top of the shoulder to the hem, and compare that number to the lengths on the product page.
Size and length are separate choices
Your size controls how the dress fits through the bust, waist, and shoulders. Your length controls where the hem falls. A petite customer might wear a size M in a 54" length, and a tall customer might wear an XS in 60". Choose each one on its own.
Quick checklist before you order
- Check the model's height, size, and length on the product page.
- Decide which shoes you'll wear most with the dress.
- Measure a maxi you already love from shoulder to hem.
- Read reviews from customers close to your height.
