Every hijab fabric behaves differently. Some grip, some slide, some breathe, some shine. Knowing the difference helps you build a hijab wardrobe that works for every part of your day.
Modal
Feel: Silky-soft, cool, and breathable.
Hold: Stays in place with light pinning.
Best for: Everyday wear, school, work, and travel.
Modal is the all-rounder. It drapes softly and is comfortable for long days. It's softly sheer, so pair it with an undercap. If you only own one type of hijab, make it modal. Start with a neutral like Pecan.
Crinkle modal
Feel: Light and airy with a fine textured finish.
Hold: Excellent. The texture grips on its own.
Best for: Busy days, beginners, and anyone who hates re-pinning.
Crinkle keeps its shape all day and its texture hides creases, so it's perfect for throwing in a bag. Try Thyme.
Jersey
Feel: Stretchy, soft, and substantial.
Hold: Very secure, often with no pins at all.
Best for: Sports, active days, and quick slip-on styles.
Jersey's stretch makes it extremely secure and easy to wrap. It can feel warmer than modal, so it's especially comfortable in cooler months.
Chiffon
Feel: Lightweight and sheer with a delicate float.
Hold: Smoother chiffons need more pins; lightly textured ones hold better.
Best for: Weddings, events, and dressy looks.
Chiffon looks elegant and photographs beautifully. It's sheer, so wear it over an undercap, and it can take a little more effort to style.
How to choose
- For everyday comfort: modal
- For zero-fuss hold: crinkle or jersey
- For workouts and sports: jersey
- For formal events: chiffon, or a voluminous modal wrap
Most hijabis end up with a mix. A few neutral modals for every day, a crinkle for busy days, and something special for occasions covers almost everything.
